Lot Description

A Chinese Blue Ground Silk Embroidered 'Dragon' Robe
Late 19th/Early 20th Century

晚清/民國 藍緞地龍袍
the ground of plain blue weave finely worked with metallic wrapped threads to depict writhing dragons in pursuit of a polychrome floss embroidered flaming pearl, and interspersed with beribboned auspicious emblems executed in knot stitches, alongside bats, amidst vaporous cloud wisps; all above a terrestrial diagram with turbulent waves crashed with auspicious symbols against craggy peaks, and a broad five-color lishui stripe at the hem, the collar and horseshoe cuffs worked with further dragons against a deeper ground.
Length 56 1/2 in., 143.5 cm.
