Lot Description

American school 19th century two civil war naval sketches,1862

Unsigned but identified as "The bombarment of Newbern" and "The Rendezvous of the U.S. Fleet in the James River," pencil, and pencil and watercolor on paper, framed. The first further inscribed " Taken from the Vidette. The many gunboats were the only ones engaged with the exception of the Lancer, Ranger and Vidette. Distant view of burning city. It was a dense smoke as a great deal of the fire was burning cotton. The channel obstructed with sunken vessels. there was no heavy firing from the Forts. The Delaware was the Flagship." Twelve boats in drawing are identified Delaware, Undermitter, Hunchback, Stars & Stripes, Southfield, Lancen Picket, Louisiana, E.B. Hall, Com. Perry, Lockwood, and Vidette, and Ranger. The second sketch inscribed " City Point Va. the rendezvous of the U.S. Fleet in the James River.. . Drawn on the spot May 29, 1862." and identifies ships as the Maratanza, Monitor, Mahaska, Galena, Coeur de lion, Aristook and, Wachasett.
