Lot Description
1 piece. 1 piece.
(Printed American Confederate Broadside.) "Charleston Mercury Extra: Passed Unanimously at 1:15 O'clock, P.M. December 20th, 1860. An Ordinance to Dissolve the Union between the State of South Carolina and other States... The Union is Dissolved!" (Charleston, S.C., Dec. 20, 1860.) Folio broadside, 21 1/2 x 11 1/16 inches; trimmed with no loss of printing, silked, small tear near bottom right edges - no loss of printing, a few light creases, offsetting from early folding.
Undetermined printing of the first secession ordinance, which was the first American Confederate imprint, originally issued minutes after South Carolina became the first state to secede from the Union.
See Crandall 1888; see Hummell, Southern Broadsides 2434 (locating 6 copies).
Largely owing to the silked & otherwise preserved condition of this broadside, we are unable to determine if it is an example of the original printing or of a later (probably 19th-century) facsimile. Sold not subject to return.
