(American West.) Small Printed Broadside. New Mexico Territory, ca. 1875. "Skip Out! / This is to Notify all Those who / have arrived in town within the / past few days, and are Gamblers, Dead-Beats and Confidence Men, / or have no visible means of sup- / port, to leave town within 24 hours. / By order of the Committee / N.B. - We mean business." Approx. 6 x 9 inches on grey paper mounted to bd.; some chipping to edges.
With signed manuscript account by G(eorge) F.C. Smillie, Washington D.C., 1897, documenting his receipt of the above broadside from Samuel Kirk Young, ca. 1875; Young also sent Smillie a written account describing the posting of the above broadside & the vigilante hanging which followed. Smillie documents the history of the above broadside in the 4 pp. letter-form document which accompanies the broadside.
George F.C. Smillie was a leading engraver for the Bureau of Engraving & Printing; Young a failed engraver of his aquaintance.
