Provenance: Estate of Ernest Fenollosa, Charlottesville, Virginia; by descent in the family to the present owner. Ernest Fenollosa (1853-1908) was curator of Oriental Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and director of the Imperial Museum of Japan. He taught at the Imperial University of Tokyo and the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts. He was the recipient of the Orders of the Sacred Mirror and Rising Sun by the Japanese Emperor. A proponent of Asian art, he wrote a number of books, including "Epochs of Chinese and Japanese Art" (compiled by his wife after his death), and "'Noh' or Accomplishment, a Study of the Classical Stage of Japan" and "The Classic Noh Theatre of Japan"(both compiled by Ezra Pound, his literary executor).
