Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. General U.S. Grant stevengraph ribbon.

5 1/4 in. (length without tassel) white woven silk stevengraph ribbon with purple tassel (soiling/staining, light splitting to threads within top text). Verso with maker's information, "T. Stevens / Coventry." Ribbon's center features a bust portrait of Grant between text reading "Richmond / 1865 / Vicksburg / Fort Donelson / General. U. S. Grant. / 'I will fight it out on this line.'" Four flags crossed with circular eagle motif make up the bottom portion of the ribbon.

Likely made for Grant's 1868 presidential campaign, this ribbon invokes his strength and resolve as a leader during the Civil War.

Property from the James Milgram, M.D., Collection of Broadsides, Ephemeral Americana, and Historical Documents
