Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 3 cased images featuring subjects with cigars, including Civil War recruits.

Sixth plate tintype portrait of two early war volunteers, distinctly attired in different patterned civilian shirts, each holding a cigar between his fingers. (Image very dark, with heavy chemical deterioration and surface loss to upper right portion and other blemishes throughout; no mat present, unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (split at spine, surface wear throughout). Both men wear tall, darker colored forage caps. They appear to be pards, perhaps even brothers, indicated by the awkwardly placed hand on the shoulder of the younger fellow.  Their attire could be interpreted as homemade Southern battleshirts, though it is more likely that they are country Yankees waiting to be issued Union blue. -- Ninth plate daguerreotype portrait of a young man wearing a wheel cap and having a cigar in his mouth. (Spotting throughout, significant tarnishing to edges; unsealed.) Housed in a full Union case with scroll design. -- Ninth plate ambrotype portrait of a young man sporting a bowtie and proudly holding a cigar in his mouth. New Bedford: A.P. White, n.d. (Plate with few spots, otherwise good clarity; unsealed.) Housed in a half pressed paper case (significant wear and loss). Advertising card behind image provides price list for A.P. White's Academy of Fine Arts at No. 5 Purchase St. in New Bedford. -- Together, 3 cased images of men with cigars.
