Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. O'SULLIVAN, Timothy, photographer. CDV of group of men at Beaufort, SC, possibly including Timothy O'Sullivan, and African American subjects. Washington, DC: M.B. Brady, 1862.

2 1/8 x 2 13/16 in. CDV on cardstock mount (toning, with some residue of a lacquer or adhesive applied over the carte; mount with a few abrasions/creases and clipped corners). Brady's copyright on mount recto beneath image.

Taken in April 1862 at Beaufort, SC, this image records a group of officers and men seated at a table and being served by three black men. The photographer, Timothy O'Sullivan, is believed to be featured here, seated second from the right. O'Sullivan was one of the first northern photographers to return to South Carolina with the invading Union forces.
