Lot Description

[CODY, KIT CARSON (1870-1876)]. CDV of Kit Carson Cody, son of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Rochester, NY: F.W. Bacon, n.d.

2 3/16 x 3 3/4 in. CDV on cardstock mount (toning and minor spotting to print, surface soil to print and mount, pinhole to lower right edge; mount with edge/corner wear). Bacon's imprint on verso, alongside ink inscription reading "Kit to Aunt Cody and uncle Edd." Ink inscription to mount recto reads "Kit Cody." Kit appears in this vignetted bust portrait wearing his hair in characteristic ringlet curls and sporting a plaid shirt.

Kit Carson Cody, the only son of "Buffalo Bill" Cody, was struck by scarlet fever at 5 and half years old and passed away on 21 April 21 1876. Kit occasionally appeared in his father's Wild West shows. While performing in a play in Massachusetts in April of 1876, Cody received a telegram from his wife, Louisa, indicating that their boy was near death from scarlet fever. He immediately caught the overnight train to the family's home in Rochester, NY, where, within hours later, Cody's son died in his arms.
