John Gibbon (1827-1896) was a regular officer with an exemplary combat record during and after the Civil War. Gibbon was promoted to brigadier general in May 1862 and given command of the "Iron Brigade" leading his Midwesterners to fame at 2nd Bull Run and Antietam. In November 1862 Gibbon was advanced to division command and was severely wounded at Fredericksburg. At Gettysburg, he led a division in Hancock's 2nd Corps and proved his mettle once again, suffering another wound that kept him from field duty until the spring of 1864 when he was awarded a second star to major general.
