Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. Unmounted large format photograph of captive Apache renegades in chains, incl. Pah-sla-gos-za, Kah-dos-la, Gon-Shay-ee, As-ki-say-la-ha, and Na-con-qui-say. [Florence, Arizona Territory]: ca 1880s.
7 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. unmounted silver gelatin photograph (some residue and soiling to recto/verso, trimmed edges, some chipping, few surface abrasions). Four Apache subjects stand against a wall behind one seated subject; each wears a pair of shackles around his ankles.
[With:] 8 3/8 x 5 5/8 in. photographic reproduction of the above (some creasing, clipped bottom edge). Verso with stamped date, "Feb 3 1967" and affixed typewritten caption reading "HELD IN CHAINS---Apache warriors shown just after they were sentenced to death at a military post in southern Arizona after a raid on white settlers."
