Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. A group of 11 hand-colored photographs of identified Native American subjects, incl. Red Tomahawk and Medicine Crow.


7 x 10 in., or smaller, hand-colored images, possibly photographic enlargements, printed directly on mounts affixed to thick cardstock, most 11 x 14 in. (very good condition overall). Most with manuscript identifications on mount recto or verso. 

Captions include: "Red Tomahawk." Lakota Indian policeman and Sitting Bull's assassin. -- "Mrs. Little Moon, Wakpala So. Dak." -- "Medicine Crow." -- "Two Wives & Medicine Crow, Ft. Thompson." -- "Andrew Ironroad." -- "Mr. & Mrs. White Bull, Cherry Creek, So. Dak." -- "White Bull." -- "Follows the Road." -- "Mr. & Mrs. White Lightning." -- "Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Ironroad, Mr. & Mrs. Bull Bear, Follows the Road, and Bears Heart." A photograph showing some of the same subjects, possibly during the same gathering is copyrighted by "Burdick, 1931," and is held at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. -- "Sioux Indians at Minnehaha Falls" (faintly penciled on verso). 

[With:] 3 images printed directly on mounts, possibly enlargements, including Native American subject identified as "Ree Scout," possible second view of "White Bull," and "Covered Wagon Train near Pierre, S.D."
