Lot Description

MADISON, Dolly (1768-1849). Autograph letter signed ("D.P. Madison"). Washington, [DC], 14 October 1848.


One page, 7 x 8 1/2 in., creased along old folds, some adhesive and paper residue to verso corners. 

In this letter written the year before her death, Mrs. Madison writes to Madame de Neuville (the wife of Jean-Guillaume, baron Hyde de Neuville) to introduce Mr. Peter Hagner Jr. In part: "I ask leave to present a worthy young citizen of Washington to your acquaintance who visits France, England and Belgium by appointment of our Executive on business of his Government. Mr. Peter Hagner Jr. is the son of an old and respect friend of mine who, with us all will be much gratified to know that he has had the favor of seeing you."
