Lot Description

MADISON, James (1751-1836). Autograph note unsigned, nominating William Pinkney to a diplomatic position. With free-franked address leaf to verso.

7 5/8 x 9 13/16 in., creased, with two areas of loss, staining, wear to edges. Verso address panel free-franked and addressed to "The President of the United States, Washington City."

In full: "I nominated William Pinkney of Maryland to be Envoy extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary  Russia, with a special Mission to the King of [redacted]."

William Pinkney (1764-1822) served in a myriad of important political and diplomatic capacities throughout his long career, including as the 7th Attorney General of the United States from 1811-1814, under President James Madison, and as United States Envoy to Russia from 1817-1818, also under President James Madison.
