Lot Description

[SLAVERY & ABOLITION -- CIVIL WAR]. Partly printed bond regarding the estate of Slaveholder Herman Shipman. Charleston, SC, 17 August 1861. EARLY CONFEDERATE DOCUMENT AMENDING US PRINTED FORM. 


1 page, folio, 8 1/2 x 14 in., partly printed document on blue paper, docketed to verso, toning along old folds. 

A partly-printed bond completed in manuscript and issued to Elizabeth Schipman as the administratrix of the estate of Herman Schipman, her late husband. Both immigrants from Germany, the Schipmans amassed two plantations, Walker and Fountain Head, and enslaved 53 individuals according to the 1850 Federal Slave Schedule, and as many as 70 by 1859. 

This form was printed with the phrase "year of the Sovereignty and Independence of the United States of America", however, the form has ben amended by hand to read "Confederate".
