Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Confederate belt by Smith & Cleghorn, Macon, Georgia. 


Approx. 40 1/2 x 1 7/8 in. leather belt with roller buckle (some wear including crazing and darkening to leather surface throughout; paint loss and oxidation to buckle). 

Smith & Cleghorn are listed in Albaugh & Simmons' directory of Confederate arms as makers of artillery harnesses, cavalry saddles, leggings, sword belts, and knapsacks. According to Macon courthouse records, the firm was in business from 1859-1865.
