Manuscript Material - Somerville & Ross (Somerville, Edith Oenone; Ross, Martin [Martin, Violet]). 4 manuscript notebooks + 2 loose gatherings of manuscript leaves.
Two folio vols. contain the first complete manuscript draft in pen & pencil of Somerville & Ross's novel Dan Russel, the Fox (pub. 1911) on 173 leaves, composed between Oct. 6, 1909 & April, 1911. These leaves include 8 pen & ink sketches (mostly of hunting dogs) by Somerville. The folio notebooks also include approx. 30 leaves of summaries of diary material from 1886-1915; drafts of lecture notes or a letter relating to women's sufferage; draft on an Irish R. M. story, "The Shooting of Shinroe" on 15 leaves, executed in ink in 1914.
Two 4to vols. contain early manuscript drafts in pencil & ink of several chapters of Dan Russel, the Fox (approx. 28 leaves), composed April, 1909; the draft of an article on P.W. Joyce's English as We Speak It In Ireland, 3 pp.; draft of an article, "The Anglo-Irish Language," on 13 leaves; drafts of 3 reviews for the London Times of hunting books, 3 pp., executed in 1910.
A loose gathering of a fair copy of part of chapter X of Dan Russel the Fox on 9 leaves is also present.
Several leaves of diary summaries have been removed from one of the folio vols. Labels in both folio vols. are signed & titled by Somerville; one quarto vol. is signed & dated by Somerville.
Edith Oenone Somerville (1858-1949) collaborated with her cousin Violet Martin ('Martin Ross') (1862-1915) in a series of admirable tales of Irish life, some humorous, some tragic.
