Lot Description

HITCHCOCK, Ripley (1857-1918), editor. The Art of the World Illustrated in the Paintings, Statuary, and Architecture of the World's Columbian Exposition. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1896.


2 volumes, folio (408 x 303 mm). Numerous illustrations (many full-plate, some of which are framed and printed in color). (Some occasional spotting.) Original straight-grained brown morocco, pictorial stamped in blind, black and gilt, edges gilt (some minor wear to extremities, a few light scuffs).

Later edition, after the first edition of 1893, illustrated by a profusion of photogravures and typogravures depicting important people and views of sculpture and architecture related to the World's Columbian Exposition. The fair was held in Chicago in 1893 and had an influential social and cultural impact on American art and architecture.
