Lot Description

GARDINER, Alan H. (1879-1963), editor. The Temple of King Sethos I at Abydos.  London & Chicago: The Egypt Exploration Society and The University of Chicago Press, 1933-1958.


4 volumes, folio. Halt-titles, 231 plates as called for (many in color, including 4 color fronticepieces) after drawings by Calverley and Broome. (Some minor spotting and toning.) Original tan cloth gilt (corners lightly bumped, some very minor staining). Provenance: William "Bill" Veeck (1914 -1986), former Chicago White Sox owner, and Mary Frances Veeck (1920-2022), Publicist and Chicago philanthropist (signed bookplates tipped-in to front or rear paste-downs).

FIRST EDITION of this monumental work covers the temple complex of King Sethos I at Abydos, Egypt. Published over 25 years based on the accurate drawings by Egyptologists Amice M. Calverley and Myrtle F. Broome, the publication was funded by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. after a visit to the site in the early 1930's where he was so impressed by the painted reliefs and Calverley's drawings.
