Lot Description

Yohji Yamamoto Three-Piece Suit, 1997

For Spring/Summer 1997, Yohji Yamamoto reinterpreted the Chanel suit. A designer primarily known for his deconstruction and unconventional shapes, he engages with the perennial classic of French fashion. An example of this ensemble resides in the collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute (AC9424 97-5-2AF), which writes, “The jackets are a little wider and the skirts have been cut off at the hems to leave the edges frayed, while the lengths of the cuffs, the sizes of the collars and the lengths of the skirts create a sense of imbalance that adds a sense of play to the comfort, wearability and the design of the garment.”

Black and white silk tweed open front jacket with gold sequin trim along opening and a slash pocket, a black and white silk tweed sleeveless top with a see through black mesh back, and a long black and white silk tweed skirt with a frayed hem.
