Lot Description

1 vol. + 1 bound ma...

1 vol. + 1 bound manuscript.
La Motte, Jeanne. Memoire Justificatif. London, 1789. 8vo, contemp. mottled calf, spine gilt, morocco spine label; joints & extremities rubbed. Uncommon copy of the surpressed French-language edition.
With original manuscript document (Paris), May 31, 1786, 9 o'clock at night. 2 pp., bound with typescript translation & commentary in 4to brown cloth casing.
This document records the official condemnation of La Motte to be whipped, branded and confined to prison for the rest of her days, as well as the acquital of Cardinal de Rohan & others in what has come to be called The Diamond Necklace Affair. The document above is likely the official court record.
For a recent account of this affair, in which a swindle engineered by La Motte & implicating Marie-Antoinette compromised the status of the French Monarchy, see Simon Schama's Citizens, 1989, pp. 203-210.
