In 1947, South Carolina Governor Strom Thurmond ran as a third-party presidential candidate in the breakaway States' Rights Democratic Party, commonly called the Dixiecrats, formed by white southern Democrats out of fear of federal intervention in state segregation laws. Explicitly pro-segregation, Thurmond's acceptance speech also is pro-lynching: "If the Anti-lynching Bill were enacted, the Congress would seize the power to punish for crimes committed within a state." Thurmond would carry Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina, as well as 1 electoral vote from Tennessee, though only 2.4% of the overall vote.
