Sioux Beaded Hide Tobacco Bag, Belonging to Scotty Philip (1885-1911)
fourth quarter 19th century


sinew-sewn and beaded using colors of pink, light blue, cobalt, translucent green, and rose; throat decorated with quill-wrapped hide thongs with tin cones and dyed feathers; G.P. (George Philip, nephew) inked above beaded panel

length 35 inches

Attached paper tag notes provenance as having been made by Sarah Larribee (Sioux, 1851-1937), wife to rancher and South Dakota politician Scotty Philip (1885-1911), who was also known as "the man who saved the buffalo".
