Lot Description
A Puzzle Purse Watercolor and Ink Fraktur Valentine
Dutch, Circa 1810
10 3/4 x 10 3/4 inches.
Both the tricolor ship's flag at the lower edge of the sheet and the cavalry uniform worn by the gentleman at right bolster an attribution to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Further, uniform codes of the early nineteenth century specified that Dutch officers of the ranks luitenant and kapitein must wear single epaulets to their right shoulders, as seen in this valentine.
Property from the Collection of Jonathan Holstein, San Francisco, California
