Lot Description
An Ink and Watercolor Decorated Bookplate Fraktur
Late 18th Century
central inscription reads Dieses Testament samt Psalter und Zeugnuß gehört der Ehrsamen Jungfer Anna Catharina Kettleryn an der wieß in der Gemeinde Wattweyl. Anno 1788. [This Bible including the book of psalms and testimony belongs to the honorable maiden Anna Catharina Kettler near the meadow in the village Wattweyl. In the year 1788.]
ancillary German text in flowers includes excerpts of holy poems, referencing trust in God and His eternal presence.
6 1/2 x 7 inches.
Wattweyl may refer to Wattwil, a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland where German is the predominant language. Lutheran Church records from Baden-Württemberg, Germany document the marriage of an Anna Katharina Kettler (1750-1808) to Christian Fischer on May 18, 1773. Baptism and burial records suggest that Kettler Fischer (also spelled 'Kottler') lived in Beuren, Nürtingen, Württemberg for the entirety of her life, but Wattwil is in the surrounding area, less than 100 miles away on the other side of Lake Constance.
Property from the James Milgram, M.D., Collection of Broadsides, Ephemeral Americana, and Historical Documents
