Harlem, New York City. 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. vintage ferrotyped sepia-toned silver gelatin print (overall very good, few minor creases as a result of handling, some corner and edge wear). Verso with ink stamp for Pix Publishing, Inc., New York City, and credit to Otto F. Hess. Provenance: The PIX Agency Archive, NY (per consignor). 

Otto F. Hess is best known for the photographs he produced during the 1930s and 1940s, which document various facets of New York City cultural life, ranging from theatrical and musical performances to sporting events and social occasions. He photographed several important jazz musicians during his career, including Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, W.C. Handy, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, and Gene Krupa.
