Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] -- [WESTERN AMERICANA]. BRUCE, T.J., photographer. Cabinet card of African American woman. Marshall, TX. 


3 7/8 x 5 1/2 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (significant toning, light soiling/dampstaining to mount). Photographer's imprint on mount recto. An elegantly dressed African American woman stands against a backdrop painted to look like the wall of a parlor, with her hand resting on the back of a wooden chair.

Thomas J. Bruce (b. 1856) was active in Linden, TX in 1880; as a partner in Bruce & Griffin in Atlanta, TX from 1882-83; in Marshall, TX in 1892, 1896-97, and 1900; and in Mineola, TX from 1898-99. He then worked with partner Harry O. Corti in 1900.
