The United States' participation in the international slave trade was banned in 1808. This prompted the creation of a domestic system for trading enslaved persons, to which Charleston soon became central with the establishment of The Old Slave Mart that same year. After slavery was abolished in the United States, the property changed hands many times before it was finally placed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The site is now home to the Old Slave Mart Museum, owned by the City of Charleston.
