First edition, only printing. 12mo, orig. brown paper bds., blue-green muslin shelfback, paper spine label; moderate wear & dust soiling, bottom 1/3 of shelfback frayed & splitting, some fraying at head of shelfback, back hinge cracked, some chipping to spine label. Some dampstaining to back endpapers, free endpapers torn, corners of free endpapers torn away. Some spotting on title, other minor internal spotting, minor dampstaining on pp. 135-(142). Lacking back flyleaf & terminal black. Uncut.
The rare first edition of the first book by America's first great novelist. 1,000 copies were printed in 1828, few sold, most of the remainder were destroyed in a fire at the publisher's warehouse.
