Lot Description

3 vols.

3 vols.
Adams, John. A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America. London, 1787. First edition. 8vo, slightly later full speckled calf, gilt, morocco spine labels; scuffed, joints & extremities rubbed. 1/2 title in vol. 2. Late 18th-century engraved portrait of Adams tipped in to vol. 1. With the bookplates of John Adams & John Disney. Internally generally clean.
John Disney's copy. Bound for him with his gilt-stamped monogram on front covers. Also with Disney's autograph annotation on vol. 1 front free endpaper verso, "J.D. Oct. 14 1787. From the author."
Rev. John Disney (1746-1816) was the biographer & heir of John Adam's English friend & associate Thomas Brand-Hollis. Presumably this copy was given to Brand-Hollis by Adams and inherited by Disney after Brand-Hollis' death in 1804.
