In the 2016 book 'Chanel Catwalk', the Spring/Summer 1991 collection is stated to be when 'Lagerfeld introduced a new look he dubbed city surfer, because it's perfect for diving into the nightlife from Paris to Rome to London to New York. It's a good way to mix a jacket over everything - leggings, a short chiffon skirt. I simply took the sporty style of the surfer and stamped it out in sequins...". Linda Evangelista wore a blue version of this white sequined jacket and walked the runway with a surfboard in her hands.

Versions of this jacket featured in the 2005 "Chanel" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in which it was described as 'referencing neoprene wetsuits’. The catalogue also reports that the jacket ‘discloses such typical Chanel details as contrasting grosgrain ribbon to define the jacket's perimeters and articulate its structural seaming'.
