8vo. 7pp. publisher's advertisements (one at front). (Some spotting and soft creasing.) Original brown cloth blind-stamped, spine gilt-lettered (some wear, front free endpaper excised). Provenance: Fannie Womell (signature rear pastedown).
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of Charlotte Bronte's first novel, drawn from her experience in as both a student and teacher at a school for girls in Brussels. Charlotte Bronte submitted her manuscript for publication in 1847, at the same time that Emily and Anne Bronte found publishers for Agnes Grey and Wuthering Heights; Charlotte Bronte's The Professor would not be published until nearly two years after her death.
