8vo. (Soft vertical crease to text and wrappers.) Original printed wrappers; slipcase. Provenance: M. C. Patterson (presentation inscription [slightly faded]); Lawrence E. Miller (library blindstamp on rear wrapper). 

PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY HAYES on front wrapper: “With Compliments / R. B. Hayes / To Mr. M. C. Patterson”.  Rutherford’s 1880 State of the Union Address was given on December 6, 1880, and significantly includes the statement: “Continued opposition to the full and free enjoyment of the rights of citizenship conferred upon the colored people by the recent amendments to the Constitution still prevails in several of the late slaveholding States.”
