All Quiet on the Western Front initially appeared as a serialized story in the German magazine Vossische Zeitung from November 10-December 9, 1928, and was immediately controversial amongst German war veterans for its perceived denigration of their efforts during the First World War. It was among the first so-called "degenerate books" to be publicly burned by the Nazis upon their ascension to power.
