Lot Description
[CRIME & PUNISHMENT]. Constitution of Society for the Prevention and Detection of Crime. Organied at North Bridgton, December 31, 1814. Portland, ME: B. Thurston & Co., [second half of the 19th century].
18 7/16 x 24 in. printed broadside (short marginal teras and chips with repairs, small dampstain at lower margin); framed to 21 3/4 x 27 1/4 in. (not examined out of frame).
A broadside advertising the Constitution and By-Laws of an anti-crime organization founded in 1814. Illustrated with an elephant printers device reading "Stop Theif!" Newspaper references to the Society occur as early as 1873 (The Portland Daily Press, 1 February 1873). The latest reference notes that a quorum was not achieved at the 98th annual meeting noting that it was locally known as the "Hoss Thief Society" (Sun-Journal [Lewiston, ME], 9 January 1912).
