Lot Description
[MEDICINE]. Dr. Jones' Liniment formerly Beaver Oil for Rheumatism and All Pains. [Albany, NY]: [H. Ferguson]., [ca 1910].
Visible 20 7/8 x 12 1/4 in. printed broadside on yellow cardstock (tears, light soil); matted and framed to 25 x 16 5/8 in. (not examined out of frame).
An advertisement for Dr. Jones' Liniment, noting that it was "formerly beaver oil," and featuring an illustration of a beaver.
Advertising for Dr. Jones' Beaver Oil appears as early as 1903, featuring the same illustration, which was manufactured by Morris Spiegel in Albany, NY. In 1909, however, a lawsuit was brought against Spiegel as it was found that the product contained no beaver oil, nor any animal oil whatsoever, and was in fact a gasoline solution. Spiegel was forced to change the name (but apparently not the product itself) and it became labeled Dr. Jones's Liniment. For further discussion of Morris Spiegel, his many lawsuits, and the history of the Liniment, please see Carl Johnson, "Dr. Jones' Beaver OIl: No Beaver, No Dr. Jones." 23 July 2019. https://hoxsie.org/2019/07/23/dr-jones-beaver-oil-no-beaver-no-dr-jones/
