After John Trumbull's 1792 Washington at Trenton,  which the artist describes: "He holds in his right hand a reconnoitering glass, with which he is supposed to have been examining the strength of the hostile army, pouring into and occupying Trenton, which he has just abandoned at their approach...He is meditating how to avoid the apparently impending ruin, and to have just formed the plan...which led to the splendid success at Princeton, on the following morning."
