Lot Description

[WESTERN AMERICANA] -- [TEXAS]. [DE PLANQUE, Louis, photographer]. CDV of steamboats on the Rio Grande at Brownsville, Texas. Ca 1865. 


2 1/8 x 3 11/16 in. CDV on lightweight cardstock mount (soiling to image and mount, wear including some loss to mount edges and corners). Verso bears pencil inscription reading, "Brownsville, Texas by Louis de Planque / Levee St & Rio Grande River ca. 1865." Buildings line Levee Street to the right side of the photograph, and a pair of men stand on the river bank near the center of the image, where ferries crossed to Matamoros, Mexico. A companion image to this one is featured in Thompson & Jones' Civil War and Revolution on the Rio Grande Frontier, a Narrative and Photographic History (page 23).
