Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. SNELL, William, photographer. Hand-tinted half plate tintype featuring a Chinese subject. Salem, MA: n.d.
Half plate full standing portrait of a young Chinese male, resting one hand on a table next to him. (Few blemishes to plate, light tarnish to edges, some spotting to mat; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (fully split at spine, surface wear and loss). Velvet pad marked for Snell. The young male subject has a shaved head, wears a long-sleeved white shirt and loose-fitting pants, and looks into the camera with a very serious expression. The table cloth features some red hand tinting.
Salem was an important port city, being visited by all number of foreign ships throughout the 19th century.
