Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Sixth plate postmortem daguerreotype of a baby identified as the son of Massachusetts Governor Thomas Talbot. Ca 1857.
Sensitive portrait of a mother holding and looking down at her deceased baby, who is posed with flowers in one of his hands. (Very light tarnishing to edges, spotting and specs to plate, spotting to mat; original seals.) Housed in a full pressed paper case (some separation to spine, surface wear).
Clipped obituary attached to case identifies the baby as Hayden Talbot, who died at the age of 4 months on 30 April 1857, son of Massachusetts Governor Thomas Talbot and Isabella Weir Talbot of North Billerica, Massachusetts.
Additional scrap of paper attached to case bears ink inscription, "Mrs. Stephen M. Crosby," though it is unclear if or how this name relates to the image.
