Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Quarter plate ambrotype featuring an Indian nanny with a white child. London: The London School of Photography, ca 1850s.
Quarter plate portrait of an Indian woman and a young white child posed affectionately. (Some image flakes/loss to image in a few spots, wipe marks; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (fully separated at spine, loss to interior velvet edges holding image in place, heavy surface wear throughout). Case back cover stamped for The London School of Photography, bearing its 78 Newgate Street and 174 Regent Street addresses, dating it to likely between 1857 and 1859.
The Indian nanny sits on the ground holding the young girl, likely the child of a wealthy Englishman, around her waist. Both are posed against a painted studio backdrop. The young girl holds what appears to be a wooden toy.
