This style of bag was originally a man's hunting pouch that held bullets, flints, and other firearms paraphernalia. The prototype of its design, included the concha to help weigh down the flap and the decorative buttons on the strap, most likely came from the Spanish. After muzzle-loaders went out of fashion, men continued to wear such pouches as a convenient pocket or a place to carry a talisman (Hanson 1994: 170)
