Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. WHITNEY, Joel, photographer. CDV of Cut Nose. St. Paul, MN: 1862.

2 1/8 x 3 1/4 in. CDV on cardstock mount (corner and edge wear to mount, including few small chips). Recto with Whitney's St. Paul studio imprint, printed identification and caption, "CUT NOSE, Who in the Massacre of 1862, in Minnesota, murdered 18 Women and Children and 5 Men."

Cut Nose admitted to the brutal murder of several settlers in response to the US Army reneging on its treaty obligations, which served as a major impetus for the Dakota War of 1862; he was hanged with 37 other Dakota on 26 December 1862.
