Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A pair of post-mortem tintypes of children, comprising:
Sixth plate tintype featuring a young child laid to rest on a surface draped with a blanket or cloth, one hand resting on her stomach, the other down at her waist. New York: Hager, ca 1858-1860. (Some clouding to image and loss of detail/sharp focus in places; unsealed.) Housed in a Common Union case with floral design, Birds at the Water Fountain 1 [Berg 2-59] (surface soil, one noticeable chip to lower edge of back cover). Paper strip placed between glass and image identifies photographer as Hager, 392 Bowery, NY. -- Sixth plate tintype of a baby laid to rest against a pillow, with her hands crossed over her stomach. (Spotting to plate, with darkening around edges, and spotting to mat and preserver; unsealed.) Housed in a Common Union case with geometric design [3-169] (surface soil, spot of discoloration to velvet pad). -- Together, 2 post-mortem tintypes.
