[NATIVE AMERICANS]. CHOATE, J.N., photographer. Album containing cabinet photograph of young Native American women, presumably students from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. Carlisle, PA.
8vo, leather album (boards detached, significant wear and damage to extremities and album pages, with several images missing). Inside page inscription, "Presented to Mrs. Lina Bushotter by George Bushotter, 5/'89." With additional inscription on reverse side of page in colorful lettering, "Mrs. Lina Bushotter's Album For Friends." Album contains 24 photographs, incl. CDVs, cabinet cards, and tintype portraits of men, women, and children, credited to several different photographers, such as Tresslar Bros., Fort Scott, KS, P. Godfrey, Fulton, MO, Butts, Columbia, MO, Parsons, St. Louis, MO, Genellie, St. Louis, MO, C.J.J. Martyr, Norborne, MO, A.J. Bruce, Mexico, MO, W.M. Hollinger, Urbana, OH, P.C. Hunter, Martinsburg, WV, and Merritt Wood, Washington, DC. Highlights include:
Cabinet card of 3 young Native American women, presumably students from the Carlisle Industrial School. Carlisle, PA: J.N. Choate (light residue to surface). Inked inscription to verso, "to George Bushotter from Ella Rikert."
[With:] Cabinet card of a Union veteran wearing a wide-brimmed hat with GAR insignia and numerous medals on his chest. Beaver Falls, PA: Leigh (light nicks to print surface). -- Cabinet card of a female actress. New York: Mora (toning and soiling to print and mount). -- 2 1/2 x 3 3/4 in. tintype in paper mount/sleeve of a serious-looking fellow (creasing to plate, some surface wear). S.L. Sears, "Traveling Photographer" (imprint to sleeve verso). Subject identified as "W.H. Hull" on paper sleeve.
