1906 San Francisco Earthquake Broadsheet. The Press Democrat, Santa Rosa, CA, April 19, 1906. Vol. 32, No. 93. “A frightful disaster overtook Santa Rosa yesterday. Just as the dawn was breaking, a mighty earthquake struck the city. It came with awful force and suddenness, hurling many people from their beds….” This was part of the earthquake that devastated San Francisco in 1906, and, although a larger city than Santa Rosa, the smaller town suffered relatively more destruction, with the downtown area being nearly totally flattened. Fortunately, Santa Rosa’s death toll was not as large as San Francisco’s. Although somewhat uncertain as to exact number, it seems as though “only” 70 or so people lost their lives in Santa Rosa. Of the over 3000 lives lost in the quake and/or subsequent fires, just under 200 were reported outside of San Francisco. About 70 of this number were Santa Rosa residents. The newspaper reported a “List of Known Dead” with 45 people known dead on the day after the quake, and a few more mentioned throughout the paper. Four of the known dead were Press Democrat employees, including Pressman Milo Fish.
