Lot Description

[WESTERN AMERICANA -- TEXAS]. A group of 3 ledgers, including a ledger and legal notebook attributed to L.C. Alexander of Waco, Texas.

ALEXANDER, L.C. Ledger and notebook. Waco, TX, 1869-1872. 4 x 6 3/8 in. leatherette ledger-style notebook (boards and spine detached, some pages loose, chipping and wear to extremities). Ownership inscription on front free endpaper: "L.C. Alexander / Waco Texas / Sept 10th 1869."

The notebook, with approximately 65 pages used, does include some pages of transactions but also includes several pages of notes related to legal definitions and the practice of the law, including several pages labeled "Jury Docket." Sid Johnson identifies L.C. Alexander in Texans Who Wore the Gray, noting that he enlisted in 1864 and served with the Texas Frontier regiment serving at the mouth of the Brazos River as a sergeant-major. After the war, he studied law and was elected a district Judge, and thereafter ran a "magnificent practice." Johnson continues: "He is an able lawyer and noted for his painstaking and careful preparation, and when before the court is a profound and logical advocate. He is a leading lawyer and citizen of Waco."
