Lot Description

[TRANSPORTATION - RAILROAD]. A collection of over 140 photographs of locomotives. Ca 1910s-1940s. 


140+ silver gelatin photographs, including original prints and period copy images (some made from 19th century photographs) of locomotives, several including engineers, ranging in size from 4 1/2 x 2 3/4 in. to 7 x 5 in. Many versos with photographer's ink stamp as well as printed or written information about the locomotive, the railroad line, and other relevant details. Photographers, studios, and publishers include Joseph Lavelle, Woodside, L.I., NY, Superior Locomotive Pictures, Philadelphia, PA, George M. Sittig, Hollis, NY, S.R. Wood, Stillwater, OK, Jukes, Rawlins, WY, Francis Gschwind, Callaway, NE, American Locomotive Company, Baldwin Locomotive Works, and Union Pacific Railroad Photo. 

Locomotives from the following railroad lines are represented in the collection: Burlington & Missouri River Railroad, Union Pacific Railroad, Missouri Pacific Railway, Oregon & Southeastern Railroad, Utah Northern Railroad, Texas and Pacific Railway, and Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. 

Together, over 140 photographs, condition generally good to very good. Toning, soiling, spotting, and wear to some images, including a small group that may have undergone water damage. Some photographs also curl upward.
