Lot Description

[FLAGS AND PATRIOTIC TEXTILES] Centennial copy of our nation's first flag.

Printed on wool, cotton muslin hoist, two small brass rings stitched to hoist, 3 x 5 feet printed on hoist (minor mothing) It was likely printed for the Centennial.

This flag has alternating red (7) and white (6) stripes with a Union Jack canton. The 13 stripes represented the original colonies. These flags have been called "Grand Union," "Great Union," "Continental Colours," "Congress Flag," "Cambridge Flag," or "First Navy Ensigns." It was the first flag adopted on 3 Dec. 1775, based on the "red union" flag of Great Britain (Union Jack canton, red field).  It was first hoisted and saluted on 4 January 1776. This flag was replaced 14 June 1777.
