Lot Description
[GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885)]. A group of covers, photographs, prints, pamphlets, and other ephemera related to the 1868 and 1872 presidential elections, comprising:
WILSON, J.N., photographer. Stereoview of an outdoor gathering featuring a large jugate campaign banner for Ulysses S. Grant and Schuyler Colfax. Savannah, GA: Wilson, [1868] (heavy soiling, some wear mount edges and corners). Ink inscription on verso identifies the view as "No. 56, Election Scene 3d. Nov. 1868." -- 2 cabinet card portraits of Horace Greely, including one by Mathew Brady. -- Cabinet card portrait of Ulysses S. Grant (heavy toning, surface soil). -- Together, 4 photographs.
[With:] Republican ticket featuring portraits of Ulysses S. Grant and Henry Wilson along with the names of nominees for presidential electors. 4 1/4 x 8 in. printed ticket (discoloration, wear to edges). -- Advertising cartoon from Puck depicting caricatures of Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Benjamin Butler enjoying Capadura cigars. 5 3/8 x 3 1/4 in. printed cartoon with advertisement for Brooklyn's "'Old Times' Segar Store No. 2" on reverse. -- Tobacco label for Genuine Durham Tobacco, featuring portrait of Samuel J. Tilden when bottom portion is folded up and a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant when bottom portion is unfolded. Text above and below portrait beckons "True Born Democrats" to "Gaze On" the face of Tilden, and "All You Good Republicans" to "behold the visage" of Grant. New York: Donaldson Brothers, ca 1870s. 3 3/8 x 5 3/4 in. printed label (creased, with light soiling and wear to edges). -- 14 illustrated covers featuring likenesses of Ulysses S. Grant, Horace Greeley, Schuyler Colfax, Horatio Seymour, and Frank P.
